2. Smoky Quartz – the gentle anchor

Smoky quartz is a quartz, chemically silicon dioxide just like clear quartz, trigonal and robust in everyday life with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its color is formed in a fascinating way: traces of aluminum incorporated into the crystal are struck over a very long time by natural radioactive radiation from the surrounding rock. This creates so-called color centers that dye the quartz smoky brown to almost black. The almost black variety is called Morion. Because these color centers are sensitive to heat, smoky quartz can become lighter over time in bright sunlight.

There is a lovely connection to Celtic lands: in Scotland, smoky quartz is simply called Cairngorm, named after the Cairngorm Mountains. It has adorned traditional Highland jewelry for generations, from brooches to the handle of the small dagger worn in the stocking with a kilt.

Smoky quartz is considered a stone that grounds without weighing you down. It is said to absorb the restlessness that often arises when old feelings surface. For me, it is the gentler brother of obsidian: anyone who finds obsidian too intense of a mirror is well-served with smoky quartz. I tell its full history in the article on Smoky Quartz.

  • ✨ Chakra: Root chakra
  • ♏ Zodiac sign: Scorpio, Capricorn, Sagittarius
  • 🤎 Color: smoky brown to almost black (Morion)
  • 💎 Mineral: Quartz, trigonal, Mohs hardness 7
  • 🎁 Ideal for: Grounding, letting go, quiet evenings

Smoky quartz keeps you grounded while you let go.

3. Garnet – the embers of the ancestors

Garnet is not a single stone, but an entire mineral group. The deep red garnets that most people picture are usually almandine or pyrope. They crystallize in the cubic system, often as nearly spherical crystals with twelve faces, and are suitable for everyday wear with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7.5. In almandine, the dark red color comes from the iron contained within. The name comes from the Latin granatum (pomegranate), as the crystals resemble its seeds.

To me, garnet is the stone of the ancestors, and there is a historical reason for this. In the 5th and 6th centuries, it was a highly coveted gemstone in the goldsmith workshops of Europe: razor-thin garnet platelets set in gold can be found in royal graves from the Merovingians to the Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo. In 2019, French researchers Thomas Calligaro and Patrick Périn published results on nearly 5,000 such garnets. According to their findings, they came from only six sources: two in India, two in Sri Lanka, and—only starting around 600 AD—two in Europe, in Bohemia and Portugal. When the supply from India was cut off, the entire style of jewelry disappeared because the European garnets were too small for it. So, when you hold a garnet in your hand, you are holding a stone that people carried across half-continents and buried with their loved ones about 1,500 years ago.

In crystal healing, garnet stands for the fire of life, connection, and consistency. At Samhain, it brings warmth to the dark hour of the ritual and serves as a reminder that remembering is not only about grief, but also about gratitude. I introduce all varieties, from almandine to the green demantoid, in the Garnet Guide.

  • ✨ Chakra: Root chakra, heart chakra
  • ♏ Zodiac sign: Scorpio, Capricorn, Aries
  • ❤️ Color: Dark red to wine red
  • 💎 Mineral: Garnet group (mostly almandine or pyrope), cubic, Mohs hardness 6.5–7.5
  • 🎁 Ideal for: Honoring ancestors, connection, inner warmth

Garnet keeps the embers of the ancestors warm in your hand.

4. Labradorite – the light behind the veil

Labradorite belongs to the feldspars, specifically the plagioclase series. It is triclinic and has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. In its resting state, it appears gray and inconspicuous. It is only when you turn it that blue, green, gold, or even violet flashes appear. This play of color is called labradorescence. It occurs because the stone, while cooling, unmixed into razor-thin layers of slightly different composition. Light is reflected and superimposed at these layers in such a way that individual colors are intensified.

It is named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where missionaries described it in the 18th century. According to an Inuit legend, the Northern Lights were once trapped in the rocks of the coast. A warrior freed them with his spear, but a part of the light remained in the stone and continues to shine there to this day.

To me, labradorite is a symbol of Samhain: the colors are always there, but you only see them from the right angle. Old traditions describe the veil between the worlds in exactly the same way. Labradorite is considered a stone of intuition and transition that opens up subtle perceptions while acting like a cloak around your own energy. Find out more in the Labradorite Guide.

  • ✨ Chakra: Third eye chakra
  • ♏ Zodiac sign: Scorpio, Cancer, Aquarius
  • 💙 Color: Gray with blue, green, and golden play of color
  • 💎 Mineral: Plagioclase feldspar, triclinic, Mohs hardness 6–6.5
  • 🎁 Ideal for: Intuition, transitions, protecting your own energy

Labradorite reminds you: just because you cannot see something, it does not mean it is gone.

"I trust in that which I cannot yet see."

5. Amethyst – the silence afterward

Amethyst is violet quartz, also silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its color is created by traces of iron in the crystal lattice, which only become violet color centers under natural radiation in the rock. That is why amethyst fades in direct sunlight, and it turns yellow to orange when heated. Incidentally, this is how a large portion of the citrine on the market is created.

The name comes from Greek and means "not intoxicated." In antiquity, amethyst was considered a stone of sobriety and a clear head. Exactly this clarity is needed when many emotions surface at once on Samhain night.

In crystal healing, amethyst is the stone of calm and meditation. At Samhain, it concludes the ritual: it is intended to soothe what has been stirred up and gently accompany you into the night. Many people place it on their bedside table afterward. You can read about which other stones are good there in my bedside table article, and everything about the stone itself in the Amethyst Guide.

  • ✨ Chakra: Crown chakra, third eye chakra
  • ♓ Zodiac sign: Pisces, Aquarius, Virgo
  • 💜 Color: Pale lilac to deep violet
  • 💎 Mineral: Quartz, trigonal, Mohs hardness 7
  • 🎁 Ideal for: Calm, meditation, concluding the ritual

Amethyst lays silence over everything that was said this evening.

My secret tip for Samhain: the Dream Coat Amethyst Point. It contains two of my Samhain stones in one crystal: a core of smoky quartz, enveloped in amethyst. To me, it is the entire ritual in one hand, from grounding to the silence afterward. I only have it as a unique piece, so it pays to be quick. 🖤💜

Must Samhain be gloomy? Why I recommend more than just black stones

If you search for Samhain stones, you will get the same list almost everywhere: obsidian, onyx, black tourmaline, jet. Black, protective, serious. That is not wrong, but it is only half the answer. And hardly anyone asks this question: what does an evening full of black stones do to a person who is already sad?

For the Celts, Samhain was not a gloomy evening, but a celebration. People ate, drank, and shared stories; the harvest was brought in, and the great fire burned on the Hill of Tlachtga. Protection for the dark half of the year and the warmth of community went hand in hand. Anyone who works only with black stones builds a wall, not a hearth fire.

In my experience, a Samhain ritual always needs a warm counterpart. That is why I place garnet next to obsidian in my selection: it brings fire into the circle. Instead of garnet, carnelian also works well as a warm companion. And one exception is important to me: if you feel very vulnerable or thin-skinned right now, leave the obsidian out this evening and take smoky quartz instead. Obsidian reflects very directly; smoky quartz holds without confronting.

"I honor what was, and I take the warmth with me into the winter."

Samhain ritual with crystals: step by step 🔥

This ritual takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You can celebrate it on the evening of October 31st, but just as well on any of the evenings before or after. The Celts, after all, celebrated for three nights. What is more important than the exact date is that you are undisturbed.

Each step corresponds to one of the five stones. If you only have one or two of them, simply use them for multiple steps. You can find more ideas on how to incorporate crystals into your rituals in the guide Using crystals in rituals.

Preparation

  • 🕯️ A quiet place where you can sit undisturbed
  • 🕯️ A candle in white, orange, or black and a fireproof bowl
  • 🕯️ A photo or a memento of a person you would like to think about
  • 🕯️ Paper, pen, and your journal
  • 🕯️ Incense of your choice
  • 🕯️ A small harvest offering: apples, nuts, or a piece of bread
  • 🕯️ Your Samhain stones, ideally charged in the moonlight on the full moon of October 26th

A quick note, since fire is involved here: never leave candles and incense unattended, and only burn paper in a fireproof bowl.

Step 1 – Arrive and ground (Smoky quartz)

Sit down, hold the smoky quartz in both hands, and breathe deeply into your belly a few times. Feel where your body touches the floor. Then light the candle and the incense and say quietly or aloud: "I am here, and I am safe."

Step 2 – Letting go (Obsidian)

Place the obsidian between you and the candle and look into its shiny surface for a while. Ask yourself: what from this year do I not want to take with me into the winter? Write it on a piece of paper, fold it, and burn it in the fireproof bowl. Watch as it turns to smoke.

Step 3 – Honoring the ancestors (Garnet)

Take the garnet and the photo or memento in your hand. Think of this person, of a very specific scene, of their voice, of a recipe, of a sentence they always said. If you like, tell them what happened in your year. Then place the garnet next to the photo and add the harvest offering as a sign of gratitude. If you wish, add a small plate or a glass for your deceased loved ones. In Ireland and Brittany, it was long the custom to leave food out for the dead on these nights.

Step 4 – Listening through the veil (Labradorite)

Hold the labradorite in the candlelight and turn it slowly until the colors flash. Then close your eyes and ask yourself a question for the coming months. Write in your journal whatever comes to mind over the next few minutes, without judging it: images, words, feelings.

Step 5 – Coming to rest (Amethyst)

To finish, take the amethyst in your hand, breathe deeply three times, and give thanks: to your ancestors, to this year, and to yourself. Extinguish the candle and let the stones stay in their place until the next morning. You can take the harvest offering outside the next day for the birds and the animals in the garden.

Affirmations for Samhain ✨

Affirmations give your ritual a voice. You can speak them during step 5 or every morning in the days after, with your stone in your hand:

🖤 "I let go of what no longer serves me and keep what nourishes me."
🍂 "I am rooted in those who came before me."
🔥 "A light burns within me that carries me through the winter."
🌙 "I trust in that which I cannot yet see."
💜 "I am allowed to rest. The new grows in the dark."

My tip: Choose the affirmation that feels right for you today and write it on a small slip of paper that you place with your stone. That way, it will accompany you through November.

Cleansing stones after Samhain: What can go in water?

After a Samhain ritual, your stones have carried quite a bit. I recommend cleansing them the next day. Smudging or placing them on a selenite plate overnight is suitable for all five stones. If you prefer to work with water, this overview will help:

  • ✅ Smoky Quartz: handles water well, but do not place in direct sunlight afterwards, otherwise it can fade.
  • ✅ Amethyst: handles water, but fades in direct sunlight. It is better to charge it in moonlight.
  • ✅ Garnet: rinse briefly under running water and dry well.
  • ✅ Obsidian: rinsing briefly is fine. As a glass, it is softer than quartz, so do not store it loose together with harder stones.
  • ❌ Labradorite: do not soak in water. It has fine cleavage planes that moisture can penetrate. Wiping it off briefly is sufficient.

For new intentions, the New Moon in Scorpio on November 9, 2026, is a good time. Place your stones on the windowsill that night and give them a new theme for the winter months. You can find all other methods in my article Cleansing and charging crystals correctly.

Frequently asked questions about Samhain

When is Samhain 2026?

Samhain is traditionally celebrated from the evening of October 31 to November 1. In 2026, October 31 falls on a Saturday. The astronomical midpoint between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice is around November 7, which is why some prefer to celebrate then.

Is Samhain the same as Halloween?

No, but they are closely related. Samhain is the ancient Celtic festival marking the end of summer. Halloween is the eve of All Hallows' Day and was popularized in North America by Irish and Scottish emigrants. Many customs, such as lights in hollowed-out turnips or pumpkins, date back to Samhain.

How do you pronounce Samhain?

Approximately like "SOW-in," with the emphasis on the first syllable. In Irish, the "mh" is pronounced like a soft "w" or "u."

Which stones go with Samhain, and do I have to have them all?

Obsidian, smoky quartz, garnet, labradorite, and amethyst are suitable for Samhain. But you don't need all five. If you only take one stone, I recommend smoky quartz because it grounds and helps with letting go without feeling too heavy.

Can I celebrate Samhain if I am not pagan?

Of course. For many people today, Samhain is simply an occasion to pause, remember those who have passed away, and consciously bring the year to a close. This does not require a specific religion, just a quiet evening and some time for yourself.

How do I cleanse my stones after the Samhain ritual?

Quite simply with incense or overnight on a selenite plate; this is suitable for all five Samhain stones. Smoky quartz, amethyst, garnet, and obsidian can also be placed briefly under water. Labradorite should only be wiped off and not soaked.
